The Priority of Quality: A Rant.
This might be a rant. We have a decades-long reputation of being un-empowered and under-represented in the executive decisions that require serious product quality risk and concerns. This is especially important for system performance. Performance is now prioritized appropriately to enable fast revenue growth and high conversion rates while ignoring long-term financial risk. Performance is often given a priority that's convenient to avoiding ethical or moral dilemmas and contradiction. This is probably a rant. The understanding of quality generally is often reduced to a technical function that can be accomplished with total automation and nearly zero human conscientiousness from those in the engineering best suited to contribute and bolster quality concerns. As such, this presentation is definitely a rant, but with a purpose. The objective of this talk is to help organize and support your efforts as testers and test leaders to ascend the corporate hierarchy with a message of import, a message of risk, a message of action and a message about quality that are being overlooked and ignored. Your knowledge, experience and advisement have value that most product owners, business analysts and executive managers probably don’t understand well enough to take action. I intend to help you get your resources in formation and design alliances to support your quest to put quality back in the minds of your executive leadership. This is a constructive rant to help you get prepared and take action on behalf of quality, your customers and society.”

Keynote: The Modern Integrated Tool Chain
As digital transformation spreads from early adopters to the larger technology industry, businesses realize they need to accelerate their rate of software delivery to keep up with industry disruption. But in today's Age of the Customer, going fast isn't enough, software organizations need to go fast with purpose and quality. That's why interconnected DevOps tool chains that encourage and invite a diverse set of 3rd party add on capabilities are needed to gain competitive advantage.

In today's talk, Forrester Principal Analyst Christopher Condo will present findings from his research and his own experience for how software development organizations are going faster using integrated tools that automate nearly all steps from development through test, but more importantly how the members of these teams are working together collaboratively to deliver superior product experiences to their customers.

Building Better Teams Through Play
Teams work incredibly hard to drive software and processes forward. Sometimes we neglect the emotional side of our hard work, leaving teams brittle and less able to adapt and bend. How do we release tension and form the strong bonds that a good team needs to be successful as well as honing some of our hard won skills? As children, we form strong bonds during recess or at play dates. As adults, we lose this sense of companionship and playfulness. Bring it back to your team with targeted fun activities that create a sense of mindfulness, improve skills, and are just downright enjoyable. Team building is the most difficult aspect of leadership–peer or otherwise. One of the best ways to facilitate team building is play! Jenny Bramble will present a method for skills and team building outside of the norm in play time. She will show how events can be arranged, when to do them, and what the benefits are for play time–including stronger teams that work better together due to their powerful relationships between team members. We will also discuss different games such as TestSphere Arena, TestSphere Bingo, “Murder” Mystery, Quality Jenga, The Planning Game, Telephone, and more! She will tie each of these games back to an element of your job.

The Voices in the Room
Both companies that consider themselves diverse and those that have goals to increase representation from underrepresented groups have teams that are high performing and producing great work. But the stats say that companies with more diversity in leadership are 20% more innovative. The bridge to the gap between what we experience as strong performance and arbitrary innovation isn’t simply increased diversity, it’s about group dynamics and operating systems. Kiera Penpeci will discuss what happens when teammates stop thinking about diversity by only focusing only on ratios of representation and consider the untapped potential gained by systematically helping to voice the different approaches to problems in the conference room.

How the UAE Government Increased Quality Across 300 Digital Services…and How You Can, Too
A massive government entity in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) delivers approximately 300 digital services to its citizens and residents, and majority of these services are accessed primarily through mobile devices. These services rely heavily on integrations with external, third-party systems and databases, and the consume sensitive data that sits atop these systems via APIs.

As is the case most complex applications found in any enterprise, maintaining quality across these 300 services is increasingly challenging, especially with testers’ lack of access to highly secure production environments, and changes introduced through frequent deployments. Khalil Talal, Quality Director at Quality Professionals, will share an in-depth, fascinating look at how his team took on the challenge of introducing continuous testing to this massive government entity. Khalil will demonstrate how service virtualization, test automation, and innovative approaches to API testing can be leveraged by those in the public or private sector who deal with similar all-too-common constraints that prevent the quality that users demand and deserve.

Seven Common API Load Testing Mistakes
Just about everyone understands why it’s so important to run functional tests for APIs and microservices. However, a surprisingly large percentage of organizations shortchange the equally important task of placing these resources under realistic loads to determine what kind of performance they can expect in production.

In this informative session, Robert Schneider from WiseClouds will describe seven of the most frequent mistakes when running these vital tests. These include:

1. Not performance testing a full business process
2. Using hard-coded data to drive tests
3. Neglecting to calibrate the virtual users
4. Concentrating load generation from a single location
5. Not factoring in external API calls
6. Trying to simulate GUI security interactions via API
7. Failing to explore multiple load generation scenarios

Keynote: The Paradigm Shift of Quality
Many years ago, Stephen Covey made the statement “Nothing Fails Like Success”.  He spoke on how that the things we do to be successful today may not be enough for success tomorrow.  This powerful statement can be directly applied to how that the changing landscape of IT is affecting the roles of our project teams.  Processes, tools, and approaches that were once successful years ago may not be enough today, tomorrow, and beyond.

This philosophy is highly applicable with the role of IT teams today.  As teams move from waterfall to Agile & DevOps, there is a call for many changes in strategies that were once successful.  The basic project dynamics are evolving into a whole new format.  The concept of “shift left” moves from “good to have” to “required” in order for DEV and QA teams to engage in the project dynamics earlier. Years ago, before companies were moving to Agile & DevOps, teams would not have imagined that skills in design, arts, and user interfaces would become so important.  However, they are critical roles required in aligning the project teams to ensure success.

Therefore, teams must evolve in multiple ways.  First, they must modify basic behavior patterns: increasing the courage of the team, engagement with the project team, being more business driven, and contributing more to the overall project life cycle.  Secondly, communication becomes one of the most critical keys to success.  And finally, teams must be willing to adapt and function in a changing environment that will continue to evolve as we learn new skills and grow with Agile & DevOps.
